The Big Three of Cancer Treatments

Once you’ve received a diagnosis of cancer, you are likely terrified. From survival rates to treatment options, it can often seem like there is a decision to be made at every corner. When discussing treatment options with your doctor, it’s important to realize the various options that are available to you. While every cancer is different and a doctor is always best qualified to make a treatment determination, as a patient it is important to understand the three main types of cancer treatment and their purpose.

First, is surgical treatment. In many cases, a tumor or other mass can be addressed surgically. While it may not be possible to remove the entire mass, many cancer treatments begin with surgery. Discussing the size and location of a cancerous mass with your doctor is the first step towards determining if surgery is an option for your particular cancer. Surgery can be a scary but it can also offer an excellent chance at full recovery.

Second, is traditional chemotherapy. While this sounds like a scary proposition, chemotherapy often offers the patient their best chance at remission. Chemotherapy was traditionally delivered via an intravenous line at a hospital. Today, in many cases, patients can receive their chemotherapy at home. There are some severe side effects of chemotherapy, such as vomiting, but many side effects can be treated with medication.

Third, many patients must include radiation in their treatment plan. Radiation is designed to shrink the overall size of a tumor. Again, a doctor is best qualified to determine if a radiation is appropriate. In most cases, radiation is handled on an outpatient basis. Treatments are general quick and painless.

Cancer treatment is scary and confusing. By working with a doctor to determine the proper course of treatment, it is possible to see improvement in your disease. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of the three often offer patients the best chance at a successful outcome.
