Patients become happy when informed that they are responding well to treatment and that half the course for treating the disease is complete. However, cancer patients invariably grieve over the fact that another half course is pending. Radiation and chemotherapy is a very painful exercise.
Radiation is used to destroy cancerous cells. The treatment method is rather crude as it involves killing a large number of healthy cells as well. This is a very inefficient way of working but there is no other cure to cancer that works as well as this one does. The physical consequences of chemotherapy is excruciating. Extreme loss of weight, loss of hair, a feeling of weakness – it is not surprising that patients do not feel happy about the fact that they are responding well to treatment when half the treatment is pending.
This is the reason why psychological treatment is essential for those individuals who are recovering from the disease. A certain level of psychological assistance is required for each and every individual who suffers from cancer. However, this assumes even more significance when the individual is recovering.
Destruction of white cells in the body invariably leads to a weakened immune system. The presence of many other diseases combined with cancer can complicate matters. The body will be unable to cope up with the large number of diseases. We all know that our immune system is affected not just by physical but by emotional factors as well. In such a scenario, a feeling of well being and sense of confidence in the individual can work wonders.
Of course, it goes without saying that all precautions will be taken to ensure the immune system is not exposed to new dangers. However, psychological treatment is a going to help the individual focus on the positives in a much better manner. Hence, this aspect of treatments should never be ignored.
