To face a potentially terminal illness and help a loved one fight it is perhaps the biggest challenge that a caregiver can face. In such a situation, a caregiver must avoid underestimating his/her importance in the family. Caregivers must understand that though they are the primary source of assistance to the patient, they are not obliged to put their lives on the backburner. Under such circumstances, a caregiver can follow these steps to maintain a healthy life for the patient as well as other members of the family.
Separate the two roles you play: You are an individual first and provide home care second. Keeping this thought in mind, chalk out a plan for yourself that will help you revitalize your life. When you are in an environment where terminally ill patients depend on you for every small need, you need to take a break from that life and spend some quality time alone or with your family. Cancer is a demanding illness but that shouldn’t stop you from living your life happily.
Lessen the stress: Living closely with a cancer patient can be mentally as well as physically taxing. Your emotions run high and every small need / desire magnifies itself slowly but surely. Keeping your cool at such times is essential. Meditation and yoga are excellent stress busters and can give you the much needed peace in your life.
Ask for help: You are doing a tough job and you might fail at it sometimes. Ask for help when you feel distressed. Doing so is not a sign of weakness. You may be highly competent but there are times when things just don’t go your way. Do not be afraid or feel guilty to ask for help.
Keep a written record: Living with a cancer patient is a full time job. It would serve you well to document your daily plans and activities. This would help you track important appointments and re-fill supplies at the right times to avoid unnecessary hassles later. When you record, it will help you plan ahead in time and be ready. Always.
